Microchipping Your Pet

Microchips are so reliable that all Thoroughbred racehorses are required to have them. Your pet may not be a multi-million-dollar racehorse, but it’s still priceless to you. Learn why you should get your pet microchipped from a veterinary hospital such as Augusta Animal Clinic in Indianapolis, IN.

It’s Easy for Pets to Get Lost

Pets have a talent for getting lost. A door or gate can be left open. A dog may slip their collar when on a walk and go chasing a squirrel. Pets may run away from your car, a pet sitter or a groomer. Dogs often go missing during July Fourth when fireworks go off.

How Many Pets Go Missing Each Year?

The American Humane Association estimates that one of every three cats and dogs will become lost at some point in their lives. About one million cats and dogs go missing each year in America. Not all of them find their way home. Many are euthanized before their owners can find them.

Pets Can Travel Long Distances

Don’t assume that your lost pet will stay in your local area. Pets can be picked up by strangers and driven far away. Pets also wander for many miles. Male dogs that have not been neutered can smell a female dog in heat about four miles away. One golden retriever named Buck traveled from his new home in Virginia to his old home in South Carolina, a journey of over 500 miles.

Microchips Usually Last the Life of Your Pet

Most microchips last an average of 25 years. You still want your veterinarian to scan your pet every year to ensure the microchip is still working.

Microchipping Is Inexpensive

Getting a microchip for your pet is often less expensive than filling your car up with gas. This is a small price to pay to help increase the odds of reuniting with your beloved pet if he or she ever goes missing.

I am beyond pleased with our experience at Augusta Animal Clinic. We made the decision to switch vets due to our German Shepherd's symptoms not subsiding after repeated visits. I called Augusta to inquire about availability and Lisa was able to promptly schedule an appointment. When we arrived, everyone was extremely friendly, professional, and courteous. Our dog gets highly anxious at the vet, but Dr. Dave was extremely patient and understanding and put him at ease. We knew immediately from the questions he asked that he was extremely knowledgable and highly experienced. He displayed genuine care for our concerns and was able to quickly provide a diagnosis and treatment plan. We couldn't be happier with our decision to switch vets and look forward to working with them again. I cannot recommend Augusta enough!

I had a diabetic cat with allergies. I have gone to multiple vets over the years and have more experience than most do with vets because mine was special needs. Dr Dave is the best. The reality of vet care is that it is expensive, but he never tried to push me to get procedures/medicines etc. Always gave various options and let me know his professional opinion and then we work together to figure out what was best for my cat. This clinic is the best because you always get consistent care (all the staff have been there for years and are very experienced), can always get an appt that day if you need, and Dr Dave understands not just the medical needs of your pet, but also how to talk to and work with the people who own the pets.
